Questions to ask yourself
Questions to ask yourself
Questions every business leader should strive to have the answers to.
Rudyard Kipling’s famous poem ‘six honest serving men’ is often quoted in business training programmes to help business leaders ask better questions of themselves first and then ultimately others.
It goes like this:
“I keep six honest serving-men, They taught me all I knew;
Their names are What and Why and When And How and Where and Who.”
Although they’re not necessarily in the right order, the poem is a great way to help you plan where you are and where you want to be.
Who am I now? – ask yourself who you are at this point in time. What sort of person are you, and what do you mean to those around you?
Where have I been? – look at your journey – your ups and downs. What has influenced your development over the years?
What do I want? – what is your vision? How has this changed over time?
Why do I want it? – what will reaching your goals help you to achieve?
When do I want it? – Bill Gates famously said, “Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years”. Look carefully at your goal and your steps to get there.
What needs to happen by when?
What steps rely on the completion of others?
How am I going to make it happen?
Ideas are often easy – implementation is usually tough. Make sure you have the tools, knowledge, and support to help you achieve your goals. And if you don’t – take a look around and go and find them.
