Safaraz Ali is an accomplished Social Entrepreneur and Change Maker. He has 2 great missions close to his heart;

1) changing lives through health, skills, and work

2) empowering people to become change makers, which in turn has built his legacy and a ripple effect that champions social mobility and inclusive growth.

Safaraz was born and bred in Birmingham B8 and was first in his family to graduate in Banking and Financial Services which led him to spend his early part of his career in Finance and Financial Services. He has spent the last 20 years setting up and leading organisations that work at rising aspirations of others, overcoming barriers and promoting positive action and change. He is the CEO and Founder of Pathway Group, a social enterprise – a profit for purpose organisation that has been operating since the year 2000 which works with young people and adult learners to get them into a job a better job or move them forward in their careers by upskilling and reskilling them. To date Safaraz’s enterprises have engaged  over 20,000 participants since it formed and just under 5,000 in the academic year 2021/22 whom have benefited from his intervention. A tangible and real demonstration of social mobility in action.

During his mission of equipping the youth from underprivileged communities into work, he recognised and shared the sentiment of the Government in 2016 that there were barriers and a low uptake of Apprenticeships by BAME individuals. This struck a chord with Safaraz, so he established in 2021 a platform to recognize,  celebrated and raise the aspiration of people from BAME backgrounds to be counted, get involved and benefit from career opportunities Apprenticeships presented The Multicultural Apprenticeship award ceremony  attracts over 3,000 apprentices who have attended the awards, 1,000 finalists over the years and over 500 organisations that were inspired and moved to be part of this cause and movement. Companies such as BT, Severn Trent, British Army, Royal Navy, Lloyds Banking Group to name a few, who have got and joined us in celebrating their multicultural apprentices. But in addition to the awards itself, there were over 200 role models created, there were endorsements by celebrities and politicians alike, round table discussions and forums. And there lies the impact; the ability to be a change maker but more importantly empower, leave a legacy and start ripples for generations to come to benefit from. Whilst the vehicle of making change was the Award ceremony, the change and impact Safaraz has had on local communities across the country, business communities both small and large and families and their children has been unimaginable. The aspirations of both youngsters and adults have raised, the hope and opportunities now recognized and social and economic mobility harnessed; all whilst dispelling the stigma surrounding Apprenticeships within the BAME community.

The work Safaraz has done in the community and for society has touched and impacted the lives of 10’s of thousands across the UK. However, his passion for Health, Education and Work is only half of his mission. The second half lies within empowering people to become the change makers, he wants to raise the people around him and support, mentor and elevate tomorrow’s leaders. Safaraz is an astute and ethical businessman and promotes and celebrates enterprise. He Founded and still runs a number of organisations that empower, recognize, celebrate, encourage and inspire business entrepreneurs, leaders and businesses around the world

Graham Hasting-Evans. CEO of NOCN Group.

I have known Safaraz Ali, the Chief Executive of Pathway Group, for over 10 years.

During his work Safaraz has demonstrated to me the tremendous commitment he has to supporting apprentices and learners from the BAME and wider multi-cultural community. This support covers a wide range of programmes such as Adult Community Learning, Youth Contract, Troubled families, Innovation Fund Innovation Fund, Skills Support for Workforce, Skills Support for Unemployed, Skills Support for Redundancy, Skills Support for Work Programme and also English and Maths Qualifications.

Whilst supporting apprentices and learners Safaraz is committed to his team and embedding his ethos and values in all aspects of Pathway Group’s business; empowering the team to be high performing and committed to making a real impact and difference.

In 2016 Safaraz convinced NOCN that the idea of the BAME Apprenticeship Awards and Asian Apprenticeship Awards was an essential initiative to help promote apprenticeships to the Asian part of our community. Traditionally the Asian community has preferred a more academic route for careers for their young people. We bought into Safaraz’s ambition and phenomenal drive and supported the founding of the Awards in May 2016. In the last 7 years Safaraz’s drive has achieved measurable and significant impact of increasing the awareness and involvement with apprenticeships in the Asian community; overcoming the stigma previously associated with apprenticeships. He has now further developed the Awards to a wider audience, and they are now the Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards.

It gives me it gives me great pleasure to write this citation for Mr Safaraz Ali.

As chief executive officer of Pathway Group Mr Ali has worked hard to ensure personal and professional growth for himself, his team and the wider BAME community. Mr Ali has developed and motivated and lead a talented team to make a significant difference to the opportunities of people from BAME backgrounds.

Mr Ali initially played a pivotal role in ensuring that the Pathway Group delivers a wide range of programmes:  as an ESOL provider, then going on to deliver Train to Gain, Adult Community Learning, Youth Contract, Troubled Families, Innovation Fund Innovation Fund, various ESF activities like Skills Support for Workforce, Skills Support for Unemployed, Skills Support for Redundancy, Skills Support for Work Program, and more.

Mr Ali understood  that UK  Business innovation and success are dependent on diverse talent and that the biggest challenge is always in attracting, retaining, and growing the right people and creating great teams of high performers. Therefore in 2016, as part of his objective to prepare students from underserved communities for the workforce and to increase the uptake of apprenticeships among BAME people, Safaraz created the Multi-Cultural Apprenticeship Awards framework to support boost the aspirations of people from BAME backgrounds and their uptake of apprenticeships.

Mr Ali’s has had a significant impact on the aspirations of individuals

in local communities and businesses around the nation. Over 3,000 apprentices have attended the Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards, along with 1,000 finalists over the years and over 500 organisations that have been moved to support this movement and cause. Businesses like BT, Severn Trent, the British Army, the Royal Navy, and Lloyds Banking Group, to name a few, have gotten involved and joined us in honouring their multiracial apprentices. But in addition to the awards themselves, more than 200 role models were developed, there were endorsements from politicians and celebrities alike, forums, and round table talks. The Multicultural Awards are indeed serving as the catalyst for change and are empowering others to act and to create ripple effects from which future generations will profit. Through his demonstration of tew rt of the possible aspirations of both young people and adults have increased, social and economic mobility is being tapped and the challenges associated of Whom with apprenticeships in the BAME community is being tackled.

I trust that this provides the details of the type and nature of the work and of the personal impact Mr Sarfaraz Ali has made.

Yours Sincerely

Jenny Pelling. Director of Apprenticeship Development and Diversity. Kaplan

I have known Safaraz through his work on broadening access to the professions over several years. It was his initiative to address the low take up of apprenticeships by young people from black, asian and minority ethnicities that led to the creation of the BAME Apprenticeship Alliance.

Since its inception and under Safaraz’s leadership, that organisation has changed the landscape of and interest in apprenticeships. In 2022, it was renamed the Multicultural Apprenticeship Alliance (“MAA”) and retains the same important social purpose.

My involvement is as a patron of the MAA in my capacity as Director of Apprenticeship Development and Diversity for a global education business called Kaplan. I am responsible for promoting diversity and inclusion to our finance, accounting and technology clients, and developing careers for young people by encouraging and supporting applications by learners from all backgrounds for meaningful well paid apprenticeship roles. Safaraz has built the network of patrons for the MAA as a visionary CEO.

Safaraz is a leading name on diversity within apprenticeships and social entrepreneurship. An offshoot of the MAA is its annual awards, which Safaraz created in his role as Founder of the social enterprise group Pathway. It is not an overstatement to describe the Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards as transformative. They have grown in scale over the last three years, and now generate significant interest, applications, energy and passion across all sectors to see the face of change and recognise and celebrate the achievements of apprentices from multicultural backgrounds. The nominees, finalists and winners are future role models to persuade others that they too could succeed through apprenticeships.

I was honoured to be a judge at the Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards in 2022, and humbled to read the powerful personal stories of the applicants. 3000 apprentices have attended the awards over the years, with 1000 finalists from a wide range of employers from the British Army, Lloyds Banking Group, EY to SMEs. This is thanks to the tireless advocacy of Safaraz.

As a careers professional, I admire his commitment to employability. He is a fellow of the Institute of Employability Professionals and a frequent commentator on improving employability.

Safaraz Ali is a remarkable leader, associate, and friend,

In terms of background, I am a member of the government’s Apprenticeship Delivery Board and an Ambassador for the Food and Drinks Industry in the development of apprenticeships and job creation throughout the UK. The company I founded, Sun Mark Ltd, is the only company in the UK to have awarded 5 consecutive Queens Awards for the enterprise.

In 2005 I was delighted to be made a Member of the British Empire and in 2016 the Commander of British Empire for his services to British Business and the Asian Community

I am pleased to provide a reference for Safaraz Ali, In 2016 following reforms for vocational training and apprenticeships, a target was set to increase the diversity of apprenticeships by 20% by 2020. As a result of this announcement Safaraz Ali of his own looked at this and found that there were some issues with perceptions and there was a stigma attached to apprenticeships. Several factors contributed such as Apprenticeships were seen negatively, there was a lack of understanding of apprenticeships and there was too much focus and pressure on going to university as well as little to no positive apprentice role models

This was the start of the Asian Apprenticeship Awards, that became the BAME Apprenticeship Awards from 2022 are now known as the Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards. The Awards inspire excellence and sharing best practice as well as creating opportunities for all.

I am proud to be a Patron for the Awards, the Awards are recognised throughout the Apprenticeship Sector attracting coverage from large multinational organisations including BT, Severn Trent, Army and Travis Perkins to name a few and attended by 500 individuals each year to celebrate the achievement of Apprentices, Employers and Training Providers making a difference.  They are recognised across several industries and sectors and well known nationally creating the ambassadors and changes needed. Without the determination of Safaraz Ali to make a difference they would not happen.

Safaraz Ali FIEP as the Chief Executive of the Institute of Employability Professionals (IEP) of which Safaraz is a Fellow, but also in the capacity of a sector peer that has seen the evolution, dedication, and passion with which Safaraz serves the local and national community.

Safaraz Ali is an accomplished Social Entrepreneur and Change Maker. He has two great missions close to his heart; 1) changing lives through health, skills, and work and 2) empowering people to become change makers themselves, which in turn has built a legacy through a ripple effect that champions social mobility and inclusive growth for all. Having witnessed some of the great work Safaraz has done, both in his local community and in a national capacity, the passion and determination he has, to better support and enable people is inspiring.

Safaraz is known to many as the CEO of Pathway Group, established in 2000 and a leading organisation that works at raising the aspirations of others, overcoming barriers, and promoting positive action and change. Set up as a social enterprise – a profit for purpose organisation, it works with young people and adult learners to support them into a new job, a better job or to move them forward in their career by upskilling and reskilling them.

Safaraz understands the importance of being part of the conversations, this he gets in part from the IEP, which is why as well as being very active in executing the outcomes, he holds several posts, to ensure he can learn from, support, and influence these conversations. As stated, he is a Fellow of the IEP, which is the professional Institute for Employability Professionals, setting standards, delivering qualifications, and developing quality services. Fellowship of the IEP is to recognise a person of standing and influence both within and beyond the Employability and Skills sector. The Fellowship is an accolade awarded to individuals after a robust verification process and holds with it the responsibility of sharing best practice, being an active thought leader within the sector and ultimately a point of reference for their peers.

He is an Executive Leader for the Institute of Directors (IoD) – British Asian Business Community Special Interest Group as well the Membership Secretary for a bereavement service. He is also a non-executive Board Member at the Employment Related Services Association (ERSA), the trade body for the employment support sector.

Inclusivity, social mobility and celebrating difference were part of Safaraz’s vocabulary, purpose, and mission, long before it became fashionable. Given his experience within Employability, Skills, and the ever-evolving landscape of local communities, coupled with the governments concern over the in effective representation of Learners from multi ethnic backgrounds within Apprenticeships; Safaraz launched the Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards. These Awards celebrate and raise the aspiration of people from Multicultural backgrounds. They make sure that these Learners are encouraged to be counted, get involved and benefit from career opportunities through Apprenticeships. I was fortunate, as a member of the Multicultural Apprenticeship Alliance, to be invited to the recent awards ceremony and I witnessed first-hand the impact it had on young people, their parents, and businesses alike.

The impact Safaraz has had on local communities across the country, business communities both large and small and families has been recognised and praiseworthy. The aspirations of young people and adults alike have been raised, their hopes, through opportunity, have now been recognised and social and economic mobility opportunities have been relished; all whilst dispelling negativity surrounding Apprenticeships within the Multicultural community. As well as the hard work and commitment Safaraz has shown the Employability and Skills sector over many years he is also a respected social entrepreneur, solving community-based problems and often trying to support areas of challenge that many would not. Safaraz Co-Founded and has since Chaired Nationwide Care Services, Co-Founded Nationwide Care Pharmacy and has also become a Co-Owner of an independent foster care agency.

The team at Coca-Cola Europacific Partners and I have worked with Safaraz for many years since the creation of the Multicultural Apprenticeship Alliance (formerly the BAME Apprenticeship Alliance). It was his vision to widen participation for under-represented groups from multicultural backgrounds which demonstrates his passion and why we as an organisation felt that it was important to not only be part of this very crucial agenda, but to support Safaraz in achieving his aim.

I have seen what the focus, drive and determination has allowed Safaraz to deliver by bringing likeminded organisations and individuals together to create an action focused patron group who work across communities, business sectors and industry to widen participation and understand the barriers that young multiculture people face and to work to break these down.

For me it did not just stop there for Safaraz, the vision to launch initially the Asian Apprenticeship awards and then quickly recognise that this needed to be expanded and become more inclusive and celebrate all things multicultural has amplified the goal and provided a very important spotlight for under-represented multicultural groups, through a fantastic annual awards celebration.

I believe that Safaraz demonstrates to others how important it is to highlight and spotlight the work in this space. We truly believe that Safaraz will not stop until he has broken down all barriers and created true equity.

I do hope that the few words, which I have provided gives you with an insight to this very commendable individual.

Victoria Sylvester CEO of MBH Holdings PLC & Acacia Training Limited

I have known Safaraz for over 20 years where we both started out on a journey together building our respective businesses in the independent training sector in the UK. Acacia Training is a Patron of the Multicultural Apprenticeship Alliance, and like Safaraz has put equality, diversity and inclusion at the heart of our organisation. Last year following a rigorous process, Acacia was accredited by the National Centre for Diversity as an Investor in Diversity and we have be recognized for numerous awards, including being shortlisted this year as an EDI Leader in the upcoming AAC awards. The work we have done with Safaraz and his team has been an integral part of our journey of discovery, learning and understanding.

I have seen Safaraz grow, develop and understand who he is and what is important both to his students and communities, and also what matters to him. From my experience of Safaraz, what is important to him is making progress every day and making everyday matter, and whilst here on this planet to have the biggest possible impact he can to make positive change for future generations.

A true leader comes from taking that understanding and having the courage and work ethic to use continual personal growth, stand aside from the crowd, move into unknown, often daunting, new territory and turn that into positive action.

This level of courage is often undervalued and the journey, which often remains unseen, never gets to be deeply appreciated.

For me, Safaraz has shown through courage, determination, work ethic, loyalty (often with a smile and some humour), that he is a person who is prepared to look at things differently, do things differently and ultimately have a huge positive impact on people’s lives.

The work he has done with regards to raising awareness and participation in education from under- represented communities will be a legacy impacting the lives of many people and communities.

What started as a desire to find ways to create opportunities for the Asian community, this has evolved with learning, in the same way Safaraz has evolved, to now embrace a multicultural outreach to more and more communities.

So, whilst my reference could focus on numbers of people or goals achieved, I would rather focus my reference on the evolution of Safaraz as leader who holds a deep sense of purpose and who turned that into action.

Your Sincerely

Safaraz is a remarkable social entrepreneur and skills leader. Throughout the years I’ve known of his work, I have seen his involvement in leading various businesses, projects and causes. The one closest to my heart and where we’ve had the opportunity to work closer together is the Multicultural Apprenticeship Alliance, and its associated awards – all delivered through the Pathway Group (a not-for-profit at the forefront of upskilling and reskilling of which Sarfaraz is CEO).

Safaraz, like myself, understands the value of training and its direct impact on an individual’s life. What Safaraz has been able to do, is not only make training more accessible but also make it aspirational.

Long before EDI was an agenda point in board meetings, Safaraz had a vision to positively impact the lives of future generations – that education and opportunities should be available to all, whatever their background. This is a vision shared by myself and my Open University colleagues and the introduction of the Apprenticeship Levy gave the OU the opportunity to deliver higher and degree apprenticeships to a diverse range of learners.

Apprenticeships have always offered the chance to earn and learn, whether apprentices work for SMEs, larger blue-chip companies or public sector organisations. The UK Government was trying to address participation in work-based learning, but some groups were more marginalised. Safaraz saw this as an opportunity to build on work he had already been doing nationally and locally. He was armed with a passion for supporting people, his sense of social purpose, commercial acumen and longstanding business relationships. This allowed him to instigate a movement – now known as the Multicultural Apprenticeship Alliance. We are proud to send members of our diverse senior team to take part in its patron meetings.

As part of this this work, Sarfaraz led the introduction of The Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards.

The awards were initially founded to engage largely excluded communities from multicultural backgrounds to become apprentices. The awards celebrate the achievements of both apprentices and forward-thinking organisations who offer a point of reference to future learners, parents and local communities and employers to see that apprenticeships aren’t just an alternative to university but are meaningful and lifechanging.

It is clear that whilst the awards themselves are a night to be remembered, celebrated and enjoyed, the night itself is a vehicle for change.

I was proud to see Tasmin Ali, an OU apprentice working at Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust commended for becoming a valued member of the Trust’s education team through the learning offered by our management apprenticeship.

Recently, we were delighted to contribute to the Pathway Group’s Apprenticeship Diversity and Social Mobility Forum, in which we presented our recent whitepaper on social mobility in the workplace. This allowed us to share our own thought leadership to a wider audience – something Safaraz has made possible.

“Safaraz Ali is an accomplished Social Entrepreneur and CEO of Pathway Group. He is known for his passion to deliver his missions:  1) changing lives through health, skills, and work and 2) empowering people to become change makers.

Safaraz has been an integral member of the business community and has driving societal change through the platforms his positions have allowed. He has been a figurehead for several projects and initiatives including:

• Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards

• Business Book Awards

• Festival of Apprenticeships

• Festival of Enterprise

A keen advocate for apprenticeships and career progression, Safaraz has facilitated opportunities for WorldSkills UK to engage with more communities across the UK via initiatives

such as the Festival of Apprenticeships where we were invited to exhibit and participate in engaging with educators and young people from local communities in Birmingham, Manchester, and London. Safaraz shares understanding of the importance of learning on the job, being trained to world class standards and being skilled in line with the demands of UK industry. Working in partnerships our organisations have strived to tackle vocational snobbery and the lack of understanding amongst educators and local communities of the benefits apprenticeships can bring.

He has also been supportive of our EDI Heroes Awards. Recognising the likeminded ideals of his own Awards, and our Equity Diversity and Inclusion Heroes Awards, Safaraz has provided invaluable strategic guidance and support for our own event. Open to all students, apprentices, employees and employers within the technical education sector, the awards are an opportunity to recognise outstanding commitment to promoting and supporting diverse and inclusive practices, and to celebrate those making a real difference. Working on this together has provided a fresh opportunity to amplify the positive practices to support underrepresented groups across education and the skill sector and inspire change so that there are pathways for underrepresented groups to enter the UK workforce.

Safaraz has taken a very hands-on role in executing change. Through his leadership he has set a shining example for others, striving to create a culture shift towards apprenticeships. Over many years he has created an eco -system of partnership working across the skills sector, through establishing business community networks, participating directly in those networks, providing access to diverse role models, recognising talent and providing a platform for success for young people across the UK.”

Safaraz has been instrumental in breaking down barriers within Birmingham and beyond since the beginning of the millennium. His dedication and commitment to changing lives through skills and work are second to none, and his work as a social entrepreneur and businessman will leave a lasting legacy for decades to come.”

“Safaraz has always been at the forefront of social change. Under Sarfaraz’s leadership Pathway Group has been able to grow from a small one-office operation into a nationally recognised company with an £11 million plus turnover, employing over 200 staff members across Birmingham, Manchester, London, West Yorkshire and D2N2. As a social enterprise Pathway Group works to raise aspirations, boosting young people’s and adult learners’ confidence through positive action and change.  Through Pathway Group Safaraz has been able to foster a community of like-minded people who oversee social mobility in action, with over 20,000 participants benefitting from Pathway’s intervention since its inception.”

“Moreover, Safaraz’s commitment to social mobility led him to establish the Thinkfest Events initiative, which prioritises running events with a purpose that creates a positive impact in the world. He has used Thinkfest as a platform to change the way many people view apprenticeships. In recent years, there has been a low uptake of apprenticeships, particularly amongst the BAME community, as a result of a negative perception towards training programmes. In 2016 following government reforms for vocational training and apprenticeships, Safaraz made a concentrated effort to challenge this negative opinion by setting up several initiatives including the Multicultural Apprenticeship Alliance, a network of employers dedicated to addressing apprenticeship diversity through policy, advocacy and conversation. He also created the Multicultural Apprentice Network and the Apprenticeships Diversity & Social Mobility Forum, both of which serve as platforms for peer support and thought leadership. Perhaps his most valuable contribution to changing negative stereotypes has been through what is now known as the Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards, which was established to increase the uptake of apprenticeships by young people from BAME communities.”

“These efforts have led to tangible changes within the training sector. The Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards have created over 200 role models who have used their success as a platform to celebrate their achievements in their apprenticeships. To date, the awards have engaged with over 1000 apprentices from BAME backgrounds across the UK. The awards are also widely recognised throughout the sector, with over 500 individuals in attendance each year. They have been essential in creating future leaders and ambassadors for apprenticeships and have helped raise awareness of the need for more diversity within particular sectors.”

“Through Thinkfest’s other ventures including the Business Book Awards and Pathway2Grow Business Networking, Safaraz has enabled over 4000 professional and personal connections annually.”

“Safaraz is a tenaciously hard worker who has a strategic vision and passion for fighting for change across several sectors. His business portfolio has only continued to expand throughout my time working with him. His care for the most vulnerable in society also led him to co-found Nationwide Care Services, a service that has catered to the need for consistently safe, high-quality, reliable care, and support for people in their own homes. He also champions a range of causes through his various other roles, including his roles as a shareholder and board member at F5 Foster Care and Nationwide Care Pharmacy, and his role as Non-Executive Chair for Junior Academy of Birmingham Sports (JABS) which supports young people to improve their self-esteem, leadership skills, and health.”

“Social mobility is in the DNA of Safaraz, his mission to promote accessibility and professional growth has led him to become a published author and gain a tremendous following on social media. Safaraz published his ‘Canny Bites’ series with the intention of encouraging life-long learning within the business community by creating something that is accessible to all. Social media has become another tool Safaraz has employed to connect with others, and he is a hugely influential figure across business sector media channels.”

“Safaraz is a true leader who has committed his life’s work to help and inspire others to achieve their potential, he is a champion of learning, growth, and opportunity, and it is hard to imagine what the training sector would be like without his leadership. With his background, it would be difficult to say how many individuals and communities he has helped to shape for the better. I believe that Safaraz is a true change-maker and entrepreneur, and I cannot think of a more deserving individual who is worthy of the recognition of the Kings Award. His tireless work in the Skills and Employability arena, his commitment to improving social mobility and his unwavering dedication to celebrating diversity within the business sector make him a truly exceptional candidate. I do hope that these few words will give you an insight into the strength of this truly admirable individual.”
