Interested in established, profitable industry awards, conferences and trade events – ideally generating circa £150,000+ in annual turnover.
Interested in acquiring profitable industry events
Some events become much more than a date in the calendar.
They bring industries together. Celebrate achievement. Share knowledge. Create commercial opportunities. Showcase innovation. And build relationships that continue long after the event itself.
Over time, a successful business-to-business event develops something valuable: a recognised name, a loyal audience, trusted sponsors, industry relationships, a track record, and a genuine place within the sector it serves.
Also, I am interested in acquiring established, profitable B2B events, industry awards, conferences and specialist trade events that already have these foundations.
I am Safaraz Ali MBE, a social impact entrepreneur, private business investor and business buyer. My approach is simple:
I invest in businesses, but I back people.
What I am looking for
My preference is for existing B2B event businesses with a proven commercial model and an established industry audience.
Events that have been delivered successfully, preferably over several years.
A proven business model with a history of making money after operating and event delivery costs.
Ideally around £150,000 or more in annual business turnover.
Business owners, employers, professionals, industry leaders, decision-makers and specialist suppliers.
An event with an identity and reputation within its market.
Returning sponsors, exhibitors, delegates, entrants or commercial partners.
Events that provide meaningful value to their industry or professional community.
Opportunities to strengthen commercial performance, improve operations or develop the existing brand.
In addition, the £150,000 turnover figure is a guide rather than an absolute minimum. A smaller event with a strong reputation, consistent profitability and a loyal specialist audience may still be worth discussing. A single successful annual event or a small portfolio of complementary events could be of interest.
Similarly, I am not looking to fund untested concepts, first-time launches or events that have yet to establish a commercial track record.
Events with a purpose
I am particularly interested in events that serve a clearly defined business or professional community. Events that help industries develop, recognise excellence, connect employers and suppliers, encourage learning, create partnerships, and provide a platform for people doing worthwhile work.
Established awards celebrating business achievement, professional excellence, innovation, leadership and contribution within a particular sector.
Professional conferences bringing together decision-makers, industry specialists, speakers and delegates to explore important issues and opportunities.
Specialist events connecting businesses with buyers, suppliers, products, services and commercial partners.
Established networking brands with a loyal business audience, repeat attendance and a clear commercial proposition.
Events focused on industry challenges, policy developments, best practice, professional development and collaboration.
Awards platforms with established categories, credible judging arrangements, industry relationships and repeat commercial participation.
Equally, I am more interested in an event that matters to a specific industry than an event that tries to appeal to everyone.
Sectors of particular interest
My interests include B2B events serving sectors such as:
These sectors are particularly relevant to my wider business and social impact interests. However, I am open to other established specialist B2B markets where the event has a strong reputation, a clear audience and a sustainable commercial model.
My geographical starting point is Birmingham, the West Midlands and the wider Midlands, although suitable event businesses elsewhere in the UK may also be considered.
The events industry is evolving
The events industry continues to offer opportunities for businesses that understand their audience and deliver genuine value. But the commercial environment is demanding. Sponsors want to know what their investment achieves. Delegates are more selective about which events they attend. Exhibitors expect relevant business opportunities. Venues, production and staffing costs require careful management. And organisers need to demonstrate that their events are worth returning to.
Indeed, the right people attending can matter more than simply attracting the largest possible crowd.
Long-term commercial relationships can provide a stronger foundation than repeatedly starting sponsorship sales from scratch.
A trusted event brand, relevant speakers and credible awards processes help maintain the confidence of participants.
Overall, a successful event needs realistic budgets, effective sales processes and a clear understanding of its costs.
Good organisation, customer service and event experience encourage people to return.
An established event community may offer opportunities to maintain relationships through content, networking and complementary activities between annual events.
Additionally, I am interested in businesses that already demonstrate these strengths, even where there may be opportunities to improve their systems or commercial approach.
You have built the event. What happens next?
Building a successful B2B event takes years of effort. You may have started with a small gathering, developed relationships with sponsors, built an audience, established a reputation, created an awards programme that people are proud to enter, or developed a conference that has become part of an industry’s calendar.
Moreover, over time, the event may have become closely associated with you.
But perhaps you are now considering a different chapter. You may want to retire, step back from day-to-day operations, focus on other interests, or bring in someone who can take the event further. Furthermore, perhaps the business is profitable but has reached the limits of what you can manage personally. Perhaps you have opportunities to expand but do not want to take on the additional responsibilities alone.
A successful B2B event should not have to disappear because its founder is ready to step back.
Likewise, I am interested in discussing suitable acquisitions, succession arrangements and growth partnerships that recognise what you have built. The aim would be to protect the event’s strengths while creating a sustainable future.
Keep what works
Not every event needs to become bigger. Also, sometimes the opportunity is to make an existing event stronger: improve the experience, strengthen the sponsor relationships, reduce unnecessary costs, develop the management team, or make the business less dependent on one individual.
Where appropriate, opportunities may include:
I am particularly interested in opportunities where an existing event already has a loyal community and the foundations for responsible growth.
In addition, the aim is not simply to organise more events. It is to build a stronger business around an event people already value.
Experienced B2B events professionals
This opportunity is not only for people who currently own events businesses. Similarly, perhaps you are an experienced:
You may have spent years working for an established events company. You understand the importance of sponsorship revenue, delegate acquisition, event production, supplier relationships and profitability. Equally, you may know how to develop an event brand, build a commercial team, improve operations, and create an experience that keeps people returning.
Perhaps you would like to run an established events business. Perhaps you are interested in a management-led acquisition. Or perhaps you have the expertise to help develop a portfolio of existing specialist events.
I am interested in meeting experienced professionals who could bring leadership, sector knowledge and commercial expertise to a suitable opportunity. That might involve an operating partnership, management role, joint venture or another agreed commercial structure.
My preference is to acquire and develop proven event brands, not start new events without an established audience or trading history. I believe some of the strongest opportunities come from bringing together a good existing business and the right person to lead it.
What could a thoughtful next chapter look like?
For one founder, the right outcome may be a complete sale and a planned handover. Indeed, for another, it may involve remaining involved for a period while a new team takes responsibility. For an established organiser, it may mean bringing in additional commercial expertise. For an experienced event professional, it may mean helping lead an acquired business. And for a small portfolio of complementary events, there may be opportunities to share systems, resources and specialist expertise.
The important thing is understanding what makes the business successful and what is needed for its future. A suitable transition should consider the event’s reputation, customers, sponsors, team, contracts and delivery commitments.
Overall, a good event deserves a thoughtful next chapter – not simply a change of ownership.
Let's talk about your B2B event business
If you own an established industry awards programme, B2B conference, trade event, exhibition or professional networking business, I would welcome a conversation. Ideally, your business will have:
Additionally, you do not need to have decided exactly what you want to do next. Perhaps you are considering retirement. Perhaps you want to explore succession. Moreover, perhaps you believe the event could grow with the right partner. Or perhaps you are an experienced events professional interested in leading an established business.
I am open to discussing suitable opportunities.
